Learn How To Strum The Guitar

If you’ve spent more than five or ten seconds with your guitar, you’ve probably already realized one of the most important truths about the instrument:

Strumming: looks easy. Isn’t.

To learn how to keep time on the guitar, you really need to start on the ground floor. You need to be able to maintain a steady strum before you can do anything else, but once you master this, other musicians will be happy to jam with you – it’s surprising how hard it is to find someone who can simply keep the beat! Here’s a great, approachable video that really breaks strumming down into easy steps.

Strumming really isn’t very complicated, but you need to spend a fair amount of time practicing before you really get it into your hands and arms. Muscle memory is the goal, so learn to love your simple strum, and make sure you can do it for 10 minutes or so at a time.

Is that all there is to know about strumming? No…but it’s all you need to worry about for now, until you’ve really mastered the most basic strum. So get practicing!

Okay, now for the fun stuff…
